Plantar Fasciitis Treatment

Plantar Fasciitis is a common cause of heel and/or arch pain that is the dread of all runners, often times leaving them unable to run for weeks and months on end. The condition has a reputation of being difficult to resolve, but at ProSport Physiotherapy we have had success with even the most stubborn of cases in our Huddersfield clinics. Why? Because we think differently!

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

The plantar fascia is the thick connective tissue that runs from the base of the heel to the bones of the forefoot. Alongside the intrinsic muscles of the foot and ankle it helps to support the arch of the foot and transfer energy from the forefoot to the ankle and up the leg. Repeated exposure to excessive stresses can result in degeneration of the connective tissue structure and lead to the condition.

While it is often described as being inflammatory in nature, the latest research shows that it is in fact a degenerative condition, and signs of inflammation do not need to be present!

Pain underneath the heel is the most common symptom associated with plantar fasciitis, but pain may also be felt in the arch of your foot or on the outside aspect. While the condition is common, it is often mistakenly used as an umbrella term to describe any pain in the foot or heel. Pain in these areas can be caused by a multitude of different reasons, and a full assessment is always recommended for accurate diagnosis!

The Pro Sport Physiotherapy Huddersfield Treatment Approach

Traditionally, this condition has been poorly understood and plantar fasciitis treatment has resolved around extended periods of rest, expensive insoles, pain relief medication, generic stretches and in some cases steroid injections or even surgery. Many of these treatments are notoriously ineffective at resolving the condition and can leave an athlete sidelined for months!

At ProSport Physiotherapy Huddersfield, we think differently! We look outside the box to find out why the plantar fascia is under excessive stress and don’t just treat the painful area. Pain tells you there’s a problem, but not where the problem is!

Inhibited core or gluteal muscles can cause the muscles of the calf to become overactive as the body fights to restore stability. This can pull on the achilles tendon and therefore pull on the plantar fascia leading to excessive stresses on the structure. Weak muscles in the neck can lead to a forward head posture, which leads to walking on the balls of your feet which also stresses the plantar fascia. The possibilities are endless!

Pain tells you there’s a problem, but not where the problem is!

At ProSport Physiotherapy we know that if you JUST treat the symptoms, you take away the bodies compensation strategy without restoring stability first and the problem just returns with a vengeance. We assess your WHOLE BODY to find out the true cause of  YOUR pain, and give you a specific, bespoke rehab program to restore stability and function and have you moving better than ever! We don’t settle for anything less than 100%!

What Others Say About Our Work...

  • “I have seen Dave O’Sullivan on several occasions over the last few years and I have always been 100% satisfied by the work he has done and the exercises and advice he has given. In fact, I am often amazed by the way he can work out what is causing what and how to put it right. Usually only 2 or 3 visits are needed, plus exercises done at home. I completed my first marathon 3 years ago, largely due to his expertise – I could hardly walk a week before race-day. I would definitely recommend Pro Sport Physiotherapy (and have done!)”

  • “A 140-mile round trip to visit Dave is well worth it as he’s restored my confidence to overcome injury, using techniques you will probably not encounter elsewhere. Dave’s manner is excellent, taking time to explain things simply and being available to clarify concerns. Many exercises prescribed are provided by video link with is far superior to the dodgy photocopied exercise sheets traditionally supplied as they ensure you can review and perform your rehab using good technique. In my opinion the ProSport experience is years ahead of the game as it adopts the advances being made in its field whereas regular Yellow Pages clincs stick to dated methods. A big plus is that Dave is also interested in getting you right.”

  • “Pro Sport Physiotherapy are amazing! I was having trouble with my hip whilst running over a certain distance. Shane worked out within 15 minutes that a tiny set of muscles near scar tissue was preventing my glute and core from firing. I worked on my exercises for a week and returned to my next appointment to find I was cured. A couple of sessions followed to ease my aching muscles now they were working and I am now fully fit to run my first ever half marathon this autumn. I have recommended the company to anyone who will listen. They are professional, knowledgable, fast workers and friendly. 5 star service with a smile :)”

  • “5 years after breaking my leg and 3 surgeries later, Dave O’Sullivan was recommended to me after I received NHS physio where I was told I was a lost cause! Dave’s work is fantastic, I felt an improvement after the first visit and now feel better than ever. He explains everything, follows up the treatment with easy to follow videos and is a nice guy. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Dave!”
