Pelvic floor problems when running  is a common occurrence and indeed we see the pelvic floor causing problems for backs, shoulders and ankle joints also! Here are some of the key points covered at the Pelvic Floor Problems When Running Worksop at Up and Running Huddersfield!

  • The pelvic floor is the bottom of the core cylinder.
  • Other parts of the core include the diaphragm on top and the abdominals around the sides and front and back.
  • These muscles must work together in unison to keep the core stable!
  • If one part of the cylinder is not doing its job correctly then another part must take up the slack!
  • The pelvic floor muscles are often the muscles to take up the slack for other core muscles not working correctly!

If the pelvic floor muscles have to take up the slack for other muscles not doing their jobs this causes the pelvic floor muscles to become overworked and dysfunctional. The signals to and from the brain become confused and the muscles are not able to do their jobs correctly!

This can then cause such problems as leakage and feelings of ‘looseness’ when running.

The Problem Is People Tighten These Muscles Further When Doing Traditional Pelvic Floor Exercises!

Traditional pelvic floor exercises consist of ‘squeezing’ or ‘holding tight’ the pelvic floor muscles. This will work well for people that have weak pelvic floor muscles however what we commonly see at Pro Sport Physiotherapy Huddersfield is that most pelvic floors are actually too strong and overworking! This might be why in the past you have done these pelvic floor exercises without any success!
