PAIN SUCKS – Or does it?

Do you suffer from pain or an injury that just keeps coming back? Have you been to health professionals and find that you only get temporary relief? If the answer is yes, then it’s time you find out why!

PAIN – The Good

There’s no doubt about it, pain sucks! But pain is important. You need pain to warn you of and respond to any potential tissue damage (e.g. when you accidently touch a hot object, you instinctively pull your hand away from it). In fact, there is a rare medical condition in which those affected cannot feel pain. Sounds good right? A pain free life! But not being able to feel pain comes with very serious consequences. If you or I touched a hot stove, bit our tongue, rolled over on our ankles etc we either: respond straight away before a serious injury occurs or, if we do end up spraining an ankle we spend the next few weeks being very aware of it because of the pain, which allows us to avoid the activities that damage it further! So while pain is an unpleasant experience, it is a necessary one

PAIN – The Useful

So now thinking back to YOUR pain, why do you think it keeps coming back? After all you’ve treated the area, why won’t it go away? That’s your bodies’ way of telling you that you have not yet fixed the issue that is causing the pain! Just because it’s your back that is hurting, doesn’t mean your back is the issue. Your back may be taking up the slack from your hips, knees, or ankles! So while you might go to your physio or chiropractor and get your back manipulated, because your back is compensating for another problem elsewhere you only get short-term relief. Unless you treat the cause, you won’t get permanent results.

PAIN – The Good

The take home message is that no matter whom you go to (be it physios, chiropractors, masseurs etc.), your clinician needs to be finding the cause of your pain! A good clinician will search for the main problem that caused the pain in the first place rather than just treat your symptoms.
