ACL injuries aren’t always the result of a horror accident. In fact, more often than not the cause of these injuries appears rather innocuous. This has been highlighted recently in the NFL with two stars suffering season ending ACL injuries whilst CELEBRATING!

The role of your ACL is simple in so much as it is designed to prevent your shin bone (Tibia) moving forward and rotating inwards relative to your thigh bone (Femur). As a result it is under the most strain when the thigh bone is rotating inwards and moving backwards relative to the shinbone.  In sports this strain occurs when side-stepping or landing from a jump where the knee falls inside the foot. These poor landing mechanics can turn a simple celebration into a potential season ending jump!

Unfortunately for women, you are 4-6 times more likely to suffer an ACL injury in sport. There is no one clear reason why and it appears that it is likely multifactorial. Various reasons from stage of the menstrual cycle to women having wider hips have been looked at within the research.  However, there is one area which it agrees upon.

PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN THE CURE!

There are some things you can do to decrease your likelihood of suffering an ACL injury.  Appropriate training can be applied to allow more effective and controlled movement at the knee. However, this could be disrupted by problems within the kinematic chain and poor compensation strategies adapted by the body in response to previous stresses. That old ankle sprain or hamstring pull could compound to leave you, despite your best efforts, at an increased risk of further injury!

Addressing muscle imbalances due to neurological inhibition can allow for the appropriate training to work within a correct and SAFE movement pattern!

I have been doing these for around an hour to an hour and a half each day since i saw you, the difference i have found is massive. Its hard to explain how i feel whilst running and cycling now, it just feels like my body is more planted. The cyclo cross is finished now, i done my first fell race today on only six running sessions maybe not the best idea in the world however because of the excersises i have been doing my body felt stronger than it ever has.   • “I’d been struggling for the best part of a year with what I (and my old physio) thought was a damaged hamstring. I’d heard about Pro Sport and read about their Soft Tissue Release Techniques and thought I’d nothing to lose by trying a new approach. Thank goodness I did….. Darragh Sheehy correctly identified I actually had a partially trapped Sciatic nerve and set about “releasing” it…. That’s another way of saying pain…..but it really is “no pain, no gain”.
